Justin, however, is pinning his hopes on getting a resentencing hearing and a chance to prove them all wrong.

This record-breaking crime drama returns for Season 23 with a two-hour premiere that starts as Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) loyalty to Garland (Demore Barnes) is tested when the investigation into a sex-for-housing scheme expands in “And the Empire Strikes Back.” Ben Rappaport guest stars. Then, in “Never Turn Your Back on Them,” the search for a missing witness leads Fin and Kat (IceT, Jamie Gray Hyder) down a dangerous path, and Chief McGrath (guest star Terry Serpico) pressures Benson and Garland to secure a conviction.

9 p.m. on (52) (60) The Outpost.

10 p.m. on (16) The Hustler.

Host Craig Ferguson welcomes five new competitors to play this mind-bending and unpredictable show, in which the key to success lies in identifying and exposing which player is The Hustler. The other players will have to glean the information they need to do that from some of the clues provided to them. In the new episode “A Little of This, A Little of That,” those clues include coffee beans, sausage and the Goo-Goo Dolls.

“There are so many subgenres of horror. Some are gorier than others, and some are more suspenseful and keep you on the edge of your seat. I don’t really know why, but it seems to bring a sense of community around fears that we’re coping with anyway.” – Diane Lane of “Y: The Last Man” on FX on Hulu

“It gives you fame, but it does not necessarily give you success. Success has to be earned, and you have to work for it really, really hard. Luckily, I had age on my side; I was 16 at the time of (that season’s) finale, so I was able to invest years in building a career.” – Lauren Alaina, seen recently in “Roadhouse Romance” on Hallmark Channel, about the effect of being an “American Idol” contestant

“I just need to take a deep breath and think, ‘OK. The house is going to get dirty, there’s going to be a mess, there are going to be bangs and bruises. And there will be meals that are French fries and chicken nuggets.’ That’s just the way it’s going to be sometimes.” – Dylan Dreyer of “Today” and “Earth Odyssey With Dylan Dreyer” on NBC, on readying herself for the arrival of her third child in November
