St. John’s airport closed after fire forces evacuation

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — A fire at the international airport in St. John’s, N.L., resulted in the passenger terminal being closed Friday with reopening set for today as cleanup continued.

The airport authority said Saturday the main terminal building was evacuated due to a fire on the second floor that started about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Airport CEO Dennis Hogan said the fire originated in a ceiling area of the departures area and was rapidly extinguished by firefighters. About 30 people were evacuated from the terminal after the alarm went off.

The airport had hoped to reopen Saturday, but Hogan said it now anticipates remaining closed until 5 p.m. today, with flights resuming at 7 p.m.

Hogan said the fire is not considered suspicious and there were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.
