Getting out and about around the WestShore

JULIE LAWLOR, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WESTSHORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Spring! While we are fortunate to be able to get out into our parks and green spaces most days, there is something about this time of year that really inspires us to get outside. Especially if you have bored children at home during this second week of spring break! There are many beautiful places to explore across the WestShore, including Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site, indoor and outdoor options at West Shore Parks and Recreation, and walking trails at Royal Roads University. You can also check out multiple playgrounds and parks, such as the Constable Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground in Langford, Gowlland Tod Provincial Park in the Highlands, and Colwood Creek Park, which includes both park and playground.

If you’d like to combine outdoor exploring with community, the Greater Victoria Green Team invites you to come outside, meet community, and help remove invasive species from Knockan Hill Park in View Royal on April 1st. No joke! Their submission to our community calendar says “NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! All ages, backgrounds, and abilities welcome. Tools and training provided. There will be snacks!”

If you are coming to and from the park from elsewhere in the WestShore and your family needs more snacks, a great place to stop with easy access off the Island Highway is Serious Coffee View Royal. With a variety of hot and cold drinks, treats and sandwiches to eat in or take out, you’ll find lots of choices available to you.

If you’re looking for an indoor family-friendly event, Westshore Town Centre has you covered. Also on April 1st, they will be “kicking off the season of funny bunny business with a floral-themed craft workshop for the whole family. Your group will fill your plant pot with pretty greens, blooms and a bunny.” Tickets are $10 per group of four maximum.
