Owner of Audi that was driven wrong way on Pat Bay Highway charged

The owner of a red Audi that was captured on video being driven the wrong way on the Patricia Bay Highway faces charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Sidney-North Saanich RCMP said they responded to a report of a vehicle travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway near Beacon Avenue around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Police confirmed the licence plate and identified the owner using dash-cam video provided by the public.

“This was an incredibly dangerous situation and we are grateful that no one was harmed,” said Cpl. Andres Sanchez, media relations officer, noting there were several instances when the driver nearly caused head-on collisions.

“At highway speeds, this could have been disastrous,” Sanchez said.

The owner was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act and police are continuing to investigate why and where the car entered oncoming traffic.

It is not a criminal investigation, Sanchez said.
