BEST HUMPHREY BOGART MOVIES
BY JAY BOBBIN
“The Petrified Forest” (1936): Bogart’s star began to rise with his portrayal of mobster-on-the-run Duke Mantee in this adaptation of Robert E. Sherwood’s play.
“The Maltese Falcon” (1941): An obvious “must” for this list, director-screenwriter John Huston’s version of the Dashiell Hammett novel casts Bogart as hard-boiled detective Sam Spade, probing the murder of his partner in a case also involving a statue that’s “the stuff that dreams are made of.”
“Casablanca” (1942): You certainly must remember this, at least if you are a true movie lover. Bogart is unforgettable as cynical cafe owner Rick (Bogart), who has an indelibly dangerous wartime reunion with his former flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), in one of the most famous films ever made ... packed with scenes that are immediately recognizable.
“The Big Sleep” (1946): Returning to the world of literary detectives, Bogart plays Philip Marlowe in this top-notch telling of Raymond Chandler s mystery that involves the sleuth with murder and a very complicated family.
“In a Lonely Place” (1950): Bogart gives a great performance as a screenwriter who just might be involved in a murder, to the alarm of his new love (Gloria Grahame). Turner Classic Movies shows the film Tuesday, June 13.
“The Desperate Hours” (1955): Instead of playing a hostage, Bogart portrays one of the fleeing criminals who take captives in this tense melodrama.
